BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Hendrix College men's track & field team sits in fourth place and the women are in fifth after the first day of the Southern Athletic Association Championships on Friday.
The Warriors broke two school records and had five top three finishes on day one. Hendrix also had several performers advance to Saturday's finals.
For the men, junior
Stephen Stearman broke his own school record in the shot with a throw of 14.55 meters (47 ft.-9 in.), placing second. Junior
Jared Lincoln took third in the event with a personal best throw of 14.05 meters (46 ft.-1.25 in.).
Freshman
Michael Spainhour broke the 22-year old 100 meter dash record by .05 seconds with a time of 11.06. He had the third best preliminary time in the event while qualifying for Saturday's final. Kenny Jones set the old mark of 11.11 seconds in 1994. Spainhour also had a third place finish in the long jump with a mark of 6.47 meters (21 ft.-2.75 in.).
For the women, senior
Estrella Flores and junior
Samantha Stockdale took second and third, respectively. Flores had a throw of 35.46 meters (116 ft.-4 in.) and Stockdale had a mark of 35.23 meters (115 ft.-7 in.).
Birmingham-Southern leads the men's field with 70 points followed by Rhodes (55), Centre (54.5), Hendrix (38.5), Berry (32), Sewanee (13), Millsaps (6) and Oglethorpe (4).
Rhodes leads the women's field with 95 points. They are followed by Berry (52), Centre (52), Birmingham-Southern (42), Hendrix (17), Millsaps (9), Oglethorpe (3) and Sewanee (3).
Hendrix Men's Notes
- Stearman earned All-SAA Second Team honors in the shot put for the third straight year. He also placed eighth in the hammer throw with a distance of 40.50 meters (132 ft.-10 in.).
- Junior
Matt Ramirez placed fourth in the long jump at 6.36 meters (20 ft.-10.5 in.), a new personal best. He was also fifth in the 110 meter hurdle prelims in 17.38 seconds and sixth in the 400 meter hurdles prelims with a season-best time of 1:00.22. Ramirez will compete in both hurdle finals on Saturday. He also finished sixth in the javelin with a distance of 44.55 meters (146 ft.-2 in.).
- Freshman
Nathan Andress finished fifth in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 10:11.02.
- Junior
Shaquille Grant recorded a mark of 6.26 meters (20 ft.-6.25 in.), placing fifth. He was also sixth in the 100 meter dash prelims in 11.17 and seventh in the 200 meter dash in 23.07, qualifying for the finals in both sprints.
- Freshman
Wes Hance cleared a personal-best height of 3.78 meters (12 ft-4.75 in.) in the pole vault, tying for seventh.
- Freshman
Sam Byrd was 10th in the 400 meter dash prelims in 54.14 seconds.
- Senior
Hunter Briggs placed 15th in the 10,000 meters in 39:10.41.
Hendrix Women's Notes
- Flores took All-SAA Second Team honors in the javelin for the second consecutive season.
- Stockdale will be an All-SAA Honorable Mention in the javelin for the second year in a row. She was an All-SAA Second Team honoree as a freshman.
- Senior
Tiatjah Johnson qualified for the 100 meter dash finals with a prelim time of 13.11 seconds, good for sixth. She also placed ninth in the 200 meter dash in 26.88 seconds.
- Junior
Victoria Amadi was sixth in the 400 meter hurdles prelims in 1:11.46, qualifying for the finals.
- Freshman
Leah Boehl took seventh in the long jump with personal-best mark of 4.70 meters (15 ft.-5 in.).
- Junior
Kelly Brice was eighth in the long jump with a personal-best distance of 4.68 meters (15 ft.-4.25 in.). She also finished 13th in the pole vault, clearing 2.43 meters (7 ft.-11.5 in.).
- Sophomore
Schylar Ferguson was 13th in the shot put at 8.15 meters (26 ft.-9 in.).
- Freshman
Amber Melcher had a time of 1:05.30 in the 400 meter dash, placing 15th.
