Bob Staab of Tulsa, Oklahoma, is one of the finest swimmers in Hendrix program history.
Staab was a four-time All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference swimmer for the Water Warriors and was inducted into the Arkansas Swimming Hall of Fame in 2005. He took first in the 500 yard freestyle at the AIC Championship all four years, won the 1,000 yard free three times and the 1,650 yard freestyle in 1981. Staab set AIC records in the 500 free each of his four seasons and the 1,000 three consecutive years. He was a member of four straight AIC champion squads and still holds a school record of 17:02.19 in the 1,650 set in 1979. Staab qualified for NAIA Nationals three seasons and placed 12th in 1979.
Staab has remained active in the swimming community, coaching the Hendrix AquaKids, Fayetteville High School and several clubs across the state. He was the USA Swimming Age Group Programs Coordinator from 1994-97.
Staab was head coach of the Phillips 66 Splash Club from 2000-10 and was the 2003 Region VIII Short Course Coach of the Year. He has been the head manager for USA Swimming at the 2007 Japan International Meet, 2008 Short Course World Championships, 2010 National Youth Team and the 2014 Youth Olympic Games. He was the 2006 National Junior Team assistant manager.
Staab graduated from the University of Arkansas with a master’s of education degree in 1985. He is currently the Director of Employee Service for Phillips 66 in Bartlesville, Okla.
