Ike Allen Laws, Sr. ('28) of Pine Bluff, Ark., was an accomplished athlete, teacher, coach and basketball official. A multi-sport athlete for the Pine Bluff Zebras, he played basketball, football and ran track. His 1923 and 1924 basketball teams won the state championship. A four-year letterman in basketball at Hendrix, he was named to the All-State team four times in 1924, 1925, 1926 and 1927. He was sub-captain of the basketball team in 1925 and captain in 1926. Laws was an extraordinary player and considered the best dribbler in the state. He also lettered in football for two years, playing quarterback. He taught and coached at Portland High School, Carlisle (Texas) and Freer (Texas), where his football team won the state championship.
