John Stroup, class of ’69, was the first Arkansas swimmer to place in the top six at a national swim meet, finishing third in the 1650 freestyle in 1966. At Hendrix he was the AIC high point swimmer in 1968 and 1969 and broke several Hendrix and AIC records in Freestyle and IM events. He helped the Water Warriors claim the ’68 AIC championships by taking first in the 200 IM, 500 Free and the 400 Free Relay. That same year, he placed 8th in the 400 IM and 10th in the1650 free at the NAIA national meet. In ’69 the Water Warriors again claimed the AIC championship with Stroup taking first in the 1000 Free, 200 Free, 500 Free and the 400 Free Relay. He qualified for the NAIA national meet in the 1650 Free, 500 Free, 400 IM and the 200 Fly. His senior year he served as captain of the swim team and received the Robertson Athletic Award given to the outstanding senior athlete.
