No one ever loved and cared for Hendrix College students and student-athletes more than Jon D. Guthrie. It is safe to say that, at Hendrix, Jon was an institution within an institution.

Born in Prescott, Arkansas, to Lee E. and Kathryn Dickey Guthrie, Jon graduated from Delight High School in 1952 and from Hendrix College in 1956. He completed Drew University School of Theology in Madison, New Jersey, in 1959 and theological studies at Heidelberg University of Germany in 1958. Jon was an ordained elder of the United Methodist Church of the Arkansas Annual Conference and served as a Methodist Missionary in Zaire, Congo, in 1959 as
the Belgian Congo declared its independence from Belgium.

Jon returned home in 1962 for further studies and returned to Zaire in 1964, leading a team of three men of A-3 missionary status in war-torn Congo. He returned to the states and, in 1968, was appointed as the associate pastor of First United Methodist Church of Conway.

In 1969, he began serving as chaplain of Hendrix College, where he retired in 1996. From 2000, until his passing in 2012, he served Hendrix as special advisor to Hendrix President Dr. J. Timothy Cloyd.

Jon was an ambassador for Warrior athletics, beginning in his days as a student when he participated in basketball. Jon was one of the founding members of the Board of the Warrior Booster Club. A devoted fan who seldom missed a game and often provided special support to players, coaches, and students of Hendrix College, Jon was the perfect example of Warrior Pride.
