The late Porter John (Class of 1934) of Stuttgart, Ark. John was a three year letterman in football. In 1932 Hendrix battled the University of Arkansas to a scoreless tie and UA coach Fred Thompson called John one of the best the Razorbacks had played against. According to legendary Hendrix coach Ivan Grove, the showing of John, the smallest lineman, was sensational.

The 1932 team, scored on only twice, was listed by coach Grove as one of his best ever. In 1933, the 165 pound guard was a unanimous choice for captain of the All-State Team by a composite vote of the Associated Press, the Arkansas Democrat and the Arkansas Gazette. He was also named to the Log Cabin Democrat’s College All-State Team.
