Ray Harris was one of legendary Coach Ivan Grove’s players. He started and played on both the offense and defense. While playing for Coach Grove, Harris and his teammates compiled a record of 18 wins, 16 losses, and one tie. One of their most notable achievements was three straight shutout victories over Arkansas State University, including a 51-0 win in 1937. Coach Grove and his teams called on Ray Harris to captain the football teams of 1939 and 1940. His leadership did not stop there, as he was elected captain of the 1940-41 basketball team.

During his four years of playing basketball for Hendrix College, the Warriors had a record of 37 wins and 30 losses. Harris averaged 7.5 points per game. The Northwest Arkansas native lettered in two sports for all four of his years at Hendrix. His Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference First Team selection for four years in both sports was also a recognition that few have received.
