Greenbrier’s Royce Williams was a spectacular four-sport athlete at Hendrix, lettering in baseball, basketball, football, and track and field.

Williams was a member of the 1920 Arkansas Athletic Association champions in baseball and 1924 AAA champs in track and field. As a senior, he was the basketball team captain and hit game-winning home runs against Ouachita Baptist in 1921 and again in 1922. As a Hendrix student, he worked for the student newspaper, The Bull Dog, and was a member of the Chemistry Club.

Williams was one of three sons of Dr. E. T. Williams, a local business owner, who went on to play professional baseball. After his Hendrix career, Williams signed with the Pittsburgh Pirates and spent 18 years playing in the minor leagues. He returned to Hendrix in 1928 as the assistant football coach.

Williams was a teacher and coach at Greenbrier High School and Marvell High School. He guided the construction of Greenbrier’s gymnasium in 1931 and retired as athletic director in 1958 to go into private business in Borger, Texas.

In 2024, Williams was named an inductee into the Wampus Cats Sports Hall of Fame for Conway High School.
