Sam Sullivan, class of ’29, was the premier distance runner in Arkansas in the late 20’s. In 1927, Hendrix produced one of its greatest track teams ever, with “iron man” Sullivan breaking the state records in both the mile (4:30.5) and two-mile (9:55.3) runs. He helped his team dominate the 1928 and 1929 state track and field championship and in ’29 broke records in the 880-yard run and the mile run.
