Born in Dewitt, Arkansas, Winfield Botts ’28 was one of five children. His father graduated from Hendrix around the turn of the century and, interestingly, gave each of his children a name that began with the letter “W.”
Young Winfield was as versatile an athlete as he was successful. During his years at Hendrix, he was a four-year letterman, competing in football, basketball, track and baseball.
Winfield was second team All-State in 1924 and All-State as a fullback in 1927, as well as sub-captain of the team. According to the 1928 Troubadour, “the Hendrix line was rated the best in the state and ninety percent of its strength was Botts.”
Winfield played guard on the basketball team for two years and threw the javelin in track for two seasons, placing third in the state in 1928. He was a catcher for the baseball team as well. Winfield was named Who’s Who Best Athlete in the 1927-28 Troubadour and was a member of the H Association for lettermen.
After Hendrix, Winfield worked in sales and possessed a deep love for sports and the outdoors. Subsequently, he worked for the Western Winchester Gun Company and represented them nationally in skeet shooting demonstrations.
Winfield lived long enough to have two sons, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
