44 Seniors Honored At Annual Banquet

CONWAY, Ark. – The Hendrix College Athletic Department handed out the yearly senior awards Friday at the Second Annual Senior Athletic Banquet. Volleyball player Melissa Clement was named the NCAA Woman of the Year, soccer player Connor Silvestri was named Hendrix College Man of the Year, soccer player Mel Roach, swimmer Sheryl Burt and lacrosse player Robert McCarthy were awarded the Bob Courtway Leadership Award. and softball player Ashley Halbert, track & field athlete Lindsey Wiggin and track and cross country runner Andres Ramirez won the Carl Babcock Award

Clement, from Rogers, Ark., ended her career as the Warriors' all-time career leader with 1,307 kills and 344 blocks. She was a two-time first team all-conference selection and two-time player of the week and has volunteered for numerous charities. Clement will graduate with a 3.65 grade point average in Allied Health.

Silvestri, of Conway, Ark., ended his career as the Warriors' career leader with 44 goals and 103 points. he was a three-time All-West Region and three-time all-conference selection. Silvestri earned Capital One CoSIDA Academic All-District Team honors twice and was an NSCAA Scholar All-South Region honoree in 2012. He has compiled a 3.53 GPA while majoring in Chemistry.

Roach, from Russellville, Ark., led the SAA with 13 goals and 30 points to go with four assists this past season and was an All-SAA First Team selection. She set the school record with four goals and nine points in a win over LeTourneau in September. Roach was also named to the SAA All-Sportsmanship Team.

Burt, of Belton, Texas, ended her career at SAA Championships, placing 10th in the 100 yard backstroke, 11th in the 200 backstroke and 14th in the 200 individual medley. She was also a part of the 400 yard freestyle relay team that placed fifth and broke the school record in 3:44.52.

McCarthy, of Richardson, Texas, was second in the SAA and 50th in the nation with a school record 30 caused turnovers. He ended his career as the school record holder with 61 career caused turnovers and second with 263 ground balls.

Halbert, from Crandall, Texas, earned All-Southern Athletic Association First Team honors and was an Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District selection this season. She ended her career as the Hendrix' career leader in games started (76) and shutouts (12) and ranks in the top 10 in several offensive and pitching categories and was three-time first team all-conference selection.

Wiggin, of New Boston, N.H., holds the Hendrix indoor record in the weight throw at 11.27 meters (36 ft.-11.75 ft.). She finished fourth at the SAA Championships in the hammer throw with a personal best mark of 40.94 meters (134 ft.-4 in.), the second-best distance in school history, and was fifth in the discus with a throw of 32.08 meters (105 ft.-3 in.).

Ramirez, from Dallas, Texas, holds the school record in the 3,000 meter steeplechase in 9:56.86. He is a two-time all-conference performer in cross country. Ramirez finished fourth at the SAA Championships in the steeplechase this season.

The NCAA Woman of the Year is awarded annually to the female athlete who is most qualified based on service, leadership, athletic excellence and involvement that participation in athletics has had upon the nominee's life.

The Hendrix College Man of the Year award is given to a senior male student-athlete who has distinguished himself throughout his collegiate career in the areas of academic achievement, athletics excellence, service and leadership.

Carl Babcock was a Hendrix football and track athlete and highly respected student body leader from 1957-61 and was the head track coach at North Texas State University. The award is given annually to a male and female athlete who best exhibit those character traits for which Babcock possessed – clean and vigorous competition, pursuit of excellence, dedication to physical health and well-being, team above self and honor above victory.

Robert F. Courtway served as a coach, professor, department chair and athletic director at Hendrix from 1961-92. His award is given annually to the male and female athlete who best exemplify the ideals for which Courtway stood for – character, leadership, sportsmanship, service and integrity.
