Seasons: 13th season
Patrick MacDonald has begun his 13th year at the helm of Hendrix’s cross country and track & field teams.
In 2014, MacDonald guided the women's track & field team to a 20th place finish at the NCAA Division III Outdoor National Championships. He coached Elizabeth Krug, who earned her fifth All-American award, and Victoria Amadi who was a two-time All-American as a freshman.
In 2015, Amadi once again became an All-American in the indoor triple jump.
Krug has been a banner athlete in Hendrix’s history, the first in school history to be crowned as a national champion in the heptathlon in 2012, but she is another in long line of track and field Warriors to earn conference and national recognition.
Under his guidance, 85 Warriors have received All-Conference recognition, including 17 SCAC and SAA Champions.
The first being Julie Coats, who won two consecutive 3000m steeplechase crowns in 2005 and 2006, while earning three trips to the National Championships, coming back with two All-American trophies for her and her 6th place finish in the steeplechase in 2005 and her 18th place finish in cross country that fall. Julie was given the Marvin Delph Award, presented to the Conway sportsperson of the year, for athletic achievement.
Julie’s achievements were followed by Laura Broederdorf and Lolly Plummer, both of whom made two trips to the National Championships in cross country, and earned several all-conference honors. Broederdorf was the 2008 conference champion in the 10,000m, while Broederdorf, Plummer, and Coats rest 1-2-3 on the school’s All-Time 10,000m list, the order reversed for the 5000m run.
Jerry Maldonado became MacDonald’s first conference champion in the field events, having finished second as a freshman, he won three consecutive titles thereafter, also securing a trip to the National Championships in 2008, where his 7th place finish earned him an All-American trophy.
Coming in the same class was Caitlin McGeehan. McGeehan earned an impressive six All-SCAC honors before finally breaking through to earn her first championship. In 2010, Hendrix hosted the SCAC Track & Field meet for the first time in 15 years, and McGeehan came home in first place in the 400m run, an event that took her to the National Championships in 2009.
As a team, the Warriors have finished as high as third place in the highly competitive SCAC/SAA twice since MacDonald arrived. With several teams finishing in the Regional top ten.
Krug entered in the fall of 2010 and has her name all over the Hendrix record book, holding 16 school records between indoors and outdoors. She was a twelve-time All-Conference honoree, having twice been named the Conference Athlete of the Meet (2012, 2013), and twice the Regional Field Athlete of the Year (Indoors 2012 and Outdoors 2013).
One of only six freshmen to earn All-American honors in the women’s heptathlon, she has consistently performed at the National Championships, missing All-American honors only once (Indoors 2012) when she finished 18 points behind 8th place. At the 2013 Outdoor Championships held at University of Wisconsin – La Crosse in May 2013, she fought back from a season-low performance in the high jump on day 1, ending the day with a school record and personal best 25.31 in the 200m dash, winning the event and moving herself back into contention. On day two, on the third and final attempt of the Long Jump and Javelin she put out her best performances of the day to keep herself close enough to win with her 800m.
Finishing second in her 800m heat, she outscored the leader by 240 points, winning by 7 points, and capping a huge comeback, having trailed by 271 points after the high jump.
MacDonald came to Hendrix from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas where he served as the assistant cross country and track & field coach for two years. He also was the Assistant Athletic Director of Facilities and Events during his second year.
Prior to his time at Trinity, MacDonald was a standout runner at WashU. A member of the track & field and cross country teams, he qualified for four NCAA Championship meets and was an 8-time All-UAA performer, winning the 2001 Indoor 3000m.
MacDonald graduated from WashU in 2002 with a bachelor’s degree in fine art. He and his wife Laura have two dogs and reside in Conway.
