Student-Athlete Advisory Committee

One of the most powerful tools of NCAA member institutions is the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. The SAACs across the nation serve several unique purposes in the support of student-athletes. Each NCAA member institution has a SAAC. Each NCAA member conference has a committee as well, which is made up of representatives from each member institution's SAAC. Finally, there is the National SAAC which is comprised of representatives from around the country selected by the Management Councils from each respective NCAA Division.

According to the NCAA, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee serves several primary purposes:

    Generate a student-athlete voice within the NCAA structure.
    Solicit student-athlete response to proposed NCAA legislation.
    Recommend potential NCAA legislation.
    Review, react and comment to the governance structure on legislation, activities and subjects of interest.
    Actively participate in the administrative process of athletics programs and the NCAA.
    Promote a positive student-athlete image.

Hendrix's SAAC Mission

The mission of this Committee is to provide insight on the collegiate student-athlete experience, offer input on NCAA and Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rules, regulations, and policies that affect student-athletes to the Hendrix College community, athletic department, and SAA conference commissioner. Committee members will communicative with the Hendrix Athletic Department regarding any issues pertaining to the hindrance of the student-athlete experience. Additionally, SAAC will organize community service efforts, offer representation on other campus-wide committees, and promote a positive image of collegiate student-athletes.

Hendrix College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) Constitution

Article I: Name of Organization

The name of the organization for which this constitution sets down the parameters for shall be named the Hendrix College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, and will be referred to and abbreviated in this Constitution as SAAC.

Article II: Purpose

The purpose of this organization is to provide insight on the collegiate student-athlete experience, and to offer input on NCAA and Southern Athletic Association (SAA) rules, regulations, and policies that affect student-athletes, to the Hendrix College community, athletic department, and the Southern Athletic Association conference. The Committee members will communicate with the Hendrix Athletic Administration regarding any issues within the Athletic Department at Hendrix College. Additionally, the Committee will organize community service efforts, offer representation on other campus-wide committees, and promote a positive image of collegiate student-athletes. Members will be required to attend monthly meetings, participate in at least one community service event every semester, and vote on NCAA and Southern Athletic Association legislation.

Article III: Committee Membership

Each Hendrix College athletics team coaching staff will be allowed to nominate two current Hendrix College student-athletes to become members of the Hendrix College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). The Hendrix College student-athletes who are nominated by their respective coaching staff will be eligible to become members of the Committee.

Article IV: Officers

The Hendrix College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be governed by an Executive Committee, which will consist of four elected officers: The Committee President, the Committee Vice President, the Committee Treasurer, and the Committee Secretary. These four officers will be elected by the Committee members. The duties and expectations of each of the four elected officers are outlined below:

1. Committee President: The President is in charge of running the Committee's meetings, organizing events, and making final decisions on, as well as coordinating, guest speakers who will participate in events. Additionally, the President must approve events and has the authority to both approve or deny any events as they deem necessary.

2. Committee Vice President: The Vice President is responsible for maintaining a list of Committee members, an accurate and current attendance record of Committee meeting attendees. The Vice President will inform all members of upcoming meetings and events via email or other form of written or electronic communication. In the event that the President is absent from a meeting, the Vice President will assume the roles and responsibilities of the President.

3. Committee Treasurer: The Treasurer is in charge of monitoring and maintaining funds and finances for the SAAC, create a budget for events, and ensure each event budget is followed. The Treasurer will collect registration fees for events, represent the Organization in requesting funds from the Hendrix College Student Senate, and will be in charge of reimbursement and dealings with the business office.

4. Committee Secretary: The Secretary is responsible for tracking minutes of each Committee meeting, maintaining effective records in regards to meetings, and aiding in organization of these meetings with the other three members of the Executive Committee.

All officers will work together, in collaboration with one another as the Executive Committee, to organize and hold Committee meetings and events. The Executive Committee's tasks shall include communication with members, the Hendrix College community, and the Hendrix Athletic Department. Tasks will also include advertising, event reservations, and general set up and take down responsibilities during, before, and after meetings and events. The faculty advisors do not need to perform any tasks regarding meetings or other events unless they request to. All current Hendrix College SAAC members, new and returning, are eligible to become elected officers of the SAAC Executive Committee as Vice President or Treasurer. In order to qualify for Committee President, the position requires at least one previous term as an Executive Officer. If there is no candidate that qualifies for the position of President, the position will become open to all members of the Committee to vote on.

Article V: Election of Officers

The officers for the following academic year will be elected in early March. The Vice President will seek nominations for each position and members of the club that have attended at least three monthly meetings. Officers will be elected by a simple majority vote of the eligible members. The platform for voting will be a digital form on surveymonkey.com. Faculty will not be able to vote or run for positions. In the case of a vacancy, the officers in the Executive Committee will take over the duties of the vacant position until another member of the is elected. If there is a runoff in the elections, then a second round of voting will be held.

Article VI: Finances

The Hendrix College SAAC will obtain funds from an annual request to the Financial Committee (FinCom) of the Hendrix College Student Senate and through fundraising. The organization will use these funds to support Hendrix College SAAC events, such as: the annual Kickin' it with the Warriors Kickball Tournament with Special Olympics-Arkansas, an annual mental health first aid certification program for leadership members of each NCAA athletics team, events for NCAA Division III Week, and invited speakers. The Treasurer will be responsible for organizing SAAC funds and will report to the Executive Committee.

Article VII: Amendments

This Constitution will be read at the first Hendrix College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee meeting of the academic school year. All members of the Hendrix College SAAC may make a motion to amend the constitution. Motions that are supported by at least three other members will be voted upon and a simple majority will result in amendment of the constitution.
