Warriors Hold Off Scots to win 8-7

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College men's lacrosse team held off a fourth-quarter comeback to defeat Alma College 8-7 at Young-Wise Memorial Stadium Wednesday night.

The Warriors (4-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first four minutes after senior midfielder Alex Ortenstone scored a pair of goals. The Scots (2-1) picked up a goal 47 seconds later, but Hendrix scored on an Owen Morse goal to take a 3-1 lead at the end of the first.

Sophomore attacker Jack Gorman scored on a Matt Latham assist early in the second to go up 4-1. Jared Nycz scored with two seconds left in the half to make it 4-2 at the break.

In the third quarter, Hendrix long stick middie Graham Marcus caused a turnover, picked up the ground ball and fired a shot to give the Warriors a 5-2 advantage. Chase Hunyadi scored for the Scots with 47 seconds left in the third to cut it their deficit to two goals.

Nycz scored a power play goal early in the fourth to make it 5-4. Ortenstone found the cage twice and Latham scored over a three-minute period to put the Warriors up 8-4. Alma picked up goals at 9:07, 4:24 and 3:05, making the contest 8-7.

Senior keeper Christian Wheeler saved a shot from Hunyadi with 30 seconds left, but Hendrix turned it over with 15 seconds left. The Hendrix defense didn't allow a shot from Alma in the final seconds of the game to hold on to the win.

For the game, Hendrix recorded eight goals, five assists, 47 shots, 27 on goal, 47 ground balls won 10 faceoffs, had 27 turnovers and 18 caused turnovers and went 25-of-27 on clear.s

Alma had seven goals, four assists, 28 shots, 23 on goal, 38 ground balls, eight faceoffs, 29 turnovers, 22 caused turnovers and were 29-of-37 on clears.
