Warriors Split Sunday Matinee at Home

Conway, AR - The Hendrix Warriors softball team hosted day two of the Warriors Spring Fling on Sunday afternoon, taking on the Blue Jays of Westminster, and the Ladies of Centenary. The Warriors dominated game one but cost themselves a chance at a sweep, falling to Centenary in game two. HC took game one 7-2 then dropped game two 5-1.

The Warriors scored early and often in game one against Westminster, jumping out to a lead in the first. Hendrix got batters on base when Deva Bharne would get walked and Nikki Sanders would soon follow that with a single to right field to put runners on first and third. Laura Mortan finished the trifecta with a double, scoring Bharne to give the Warriors a 1-0 lead.

Bharne added to the Warriors lead in the bottom of the second when she doubled to bring home a run to put Hendrix up two. The double would bring home Madi Fires.

The Blue Jays got one back in the top half of the fourth but the Warriors bats were not finished. In the bottom of the fourth the Warriors continued to pour it on, starting with an RBI double by Karli Sewell to score Bryanna Carlisle and make it 4-1 Hendrix.

Sanders followed up Sewell by immediately sending her home with an RBI double of her own.

The Warriors tacked two more runs on in the sixth to secure the 7-2 win in game one. Seven different Warriors got at least one hit at the plate, including Sanders who had a team high four hits in game one. Sewell (2), Sanders (2), Bharne (1), Mortan (1), and Jordan Mallard (1) all earned at least one RBI in the win as well.

Just as impressive as the offensive output was what the Warriors got on the mound from Savannah Draud. She scattered four hits in seven innings of work, giving up just two runs.

Game number two against Centenary saw some fireworks from both offenses in the fourth inning, however the 5-1 victory would go to Centenary. The Warriors started from behind and were playing catch up in the the second game.

The Ladies got five runs across in the fourth inning before the Warriors were able to answer. With two outs, Mallard would reach base on an error bringing home the only run for HC in the game.

The Maverick offense continued its strong play, getting eight hits and one run.

The loss drops the Warriors to 3-4 overall as they look forward to a  SAA conference date against Rhodes on Saturday, February 24 at home. First pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm.
