Clermont, FL - The Hendrix College softball team competed in day two of the Spring Games today with doubleheader. Game one was against Williams College and game two was a match-up with Lawrence University. The Warriors looked to keep the wins coming after splitting in their doubleheader yesterday.
Hendrix began the day with a battle against Williams that saw them come up short 17-11.
The Ephs struck first scoring seven runs in the top of the second inning. This gave Williams a 7-0 lead. The lead would extend as the Ephs added two more runs in the top of the third (10-0).
The Ephs were able to extend their lead even further after a three hit, three run top of the fourth inning that put them up 12-0. HC would get themselves on the board in the bottom of the fourth.Â
Nikki Sanders got the team going with a lead-off double.
Jordan Mallard then doubled to drive in Sanders.Â
Laura Mortan kept the inning going with a double of her own to advance Mallard home.Â
Aubrey Brink stepped up to the plate and drove in the third run of the inning with a double. HC would add four more runs before the inning would end to cut their defect to 12-7.
The Ephs would strike again in the fifth putting up two runs on three hits. Hendrix found themselves trailing 14-7 with just three at bats remaining.
The Warriors were able to push across two runs in the bottom of the fifth as the score stood at 14-9 heading into the sixth frame. Williams added an insurance run in the top of the sixth to put Hendrix in a eight run hole.
A Mallard two run home run would be the final runs of the game for the Warriors as they dropped game one of the day 17-11.
The Warriors were led by Mallard with three hits and Mortan with three of her own.Â
After losing a tough game one Hendrix turned right back around and squared off with Lawrence University in the second half of their doubleheader. Game two was a different story as the Warriors offense came out strong and scored four runs as they dominated the Vikings 4-0. The Warriors combined for nine hits to close out the game.
Hendrix scored their first run in their half of the fourth inning to take a lead early. The scoring continued in the seventh inning as the Warriors crushed three hits that led to three more runs to increase their lead to 4-0 giving them the victory. Â
It was a total team effort as Hendrix saw seven different players, record at least one hit with one recording multiple. The offense was led by a perfect day at the plate by Mallard who went 3-3 with one RBI and one run scored.Â
Karli Sewell, Sanders, and
Jaydan Hunt all pitched in with one hit and one RBI each to help fuel the powerful Warrior attack.Â
The Warriors ended the day with a 9-10 record and look to continue their hot hitting as they have two more contests tomorrow. They open up with Chicago at 2 p.m. and then take on Tufts University at 4:30 p.m.
