DANVILLE, Ky. - Hendrix ran its overall win streak to seven games following two victories Saturday over Centre (Ky.) by scores of 5-4 and 4-1 in the Southern Athletic Association (SAA) opening series for both squads. The Warriors have won four-straight games at Centre Softball Field dating back to last season and go for the series sweep Sunday, with first pitch set for 11 a.m. CT. The Colonels have lost four-consecutive games overall, all at home.
The series was moved from Warrior Softball Field to The Bluegrass State due to inclement weather, with the Orange and Black maintaining the home team on the scoreboard for all three games.
In his first season guiding Hendrix (9-1, 2-0 SAA),
Mark Suire has the Warriors off to their best start in program history, surpassing an 8-1 mark to begin the 2019 campaign.Â
In game one, Hendrix rallied from a 3-1 deficit with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning when
Hailey Johnston andÂ
Avery Colclaser scored following an Abby Duncan fielding error. A
Betty Wolfe sacrifice fly in the sixth gave the Warriors a 4-3 lead. After a Kaylee Gregory sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh knotted the affair, a
Kinsey Bryant walk-off double in the bottom of the frame allowed Johnston to score from first.
Johnston and
Kelsey Sample each had two hits. Johnston scored three times. Wolfe drew two walks.
Johnston (4-0) went the distance in the circle for the win, allowing four earned runs on eight hits with a career-high eight strikeouts against three walks.
Sawyer Lucius was 4-for-4 at the plate with three RBIs and a run scored in the loss.
The Colonels' Andrea Searcy started in the circle but took a no decision, giving up three runs, one earned, on four hits with six strikeouts and three walks in 4.1 innings. Lucy Baseheart (0-2) suffered the loss, surrendering two earned runs on three hits with a strikeout and walk in 1.2 innings of relief.
Centre (4-6, 0-2 SAA) committed two errors.
In game two, the Warriors grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first courtesy of an
Aubrey Lee RBI groundout and
Grace Bryant RBI single which allowed Johnston to score and K. Bryant to touch home from second as a result of a fielding error by Maddison Ellis.
A Brylin Isaacs RBI single in the top of the second got the Colonels on the board, but Hendrix added an insurance run in the third when K. Bryant scored on Ellis' second fielding error of the contest.
Colclaser and G. Bryant recorded two hits apiece. G. Bryant ended with two RBIs. K. Bryant scored twice.
Sample (2-0) pitched a complete game for the victory, allowing just one earned run on six hits while fanning three, all on just 78 pitches.
