DANVILLE, Ky. - Hendrix ran its overall win streak to eight games and completed a three-game sweep of Centre (Ky.) following a 10-7 victory on Sunday in Southern Athletic Association (SAA) action. The Warriors have won five-straight games at Centre Softball Field dating back to last season. The Colonels have lost five-consecutive games overall, all at home.
The series was moved from Warrior Softball Field to The Bluegrass State due to inclement weather, with the Orange and Black maintaining the home team on the scoreboard for all three games.
The Warriors notched their first three-game sweep in conference play since 2020 at Sewanee (Tenn.).
In his first season guiding Hendrix (10-1, 3-0 SAA),Â
Mark Suire has the Warriors off to their best start in program history. The Warriors are tied for the third longest active win streak in the country, trailing only Salisbury (Md.) by two games and Randolph-Macon (Va.) by one.
Hendrix jumped out to a 7-1 lead after one inning, with six runs coming with two outs. Five of the Warriors' 10 hits in the contest came in the half-inning. A
Kinsey Bryant RBI double tied the contest in the bottom of the frame. A
Grace Bryant RBI single and
Kelsey Sample RBI double made the score 3-1. With bases loaded, Sample scored on a fielding error by Brylin Isaacs before
Avery Colclaser cleared the bases in the next at-bat with a three-run triple.
Isaacs, Sawyer Lecius, Riley McCue and Sam Rogers produced RBI hits in the next two innings to trim the Centre (4-7, 0-3 SAA) deficit to 7-5, but Colclaser delivered what proved to be the game-winning RBI double in the bottom of the third.
In the top of the sixth, Kaylen Storms took home on a double steal, and Mia Tomillo had a RBI single. The Warriors added two insurance runs in the home half of the inning via the bat and base running of a G. Bryant. She recorded a RBI on a fielder's choice and later scored because of a fielding error by McCue.
Colclaser, K. Bryant, G. Bryant and Sample registered two hits apiece. Colclaser drove in four. G. Bryant and
Savannah Shaw each scored twice.Â
Hailey Johnston induced two base on balls. G. Bryant had three of her team's four stolen bases.
Hendrix's
Makayla Ragland made the start in the circle but took a no decision, allowing five runs, four earned, on eight hits in 2.1 innings.
Skyler Teague (3-0) earned the win with 2.1 innings of relief, giving up just one earned run on two hits with two walks. Johnston threw an inning out of the bullpen, surrendering one earned run on two hits with two strikeouts and a walk. Sample (1) earned the save after allowing just one hit in the final inning.
Four different Colonels had two hits, and seven different players scored one run. McCue drove in two.Â
Andrea Searcy (2-1) took the loss after being chased from the circle after just two-thirds of an inning, surrendering six runs, three earned, on four hits with two walks. Lucy Baseheart pitched five innings of relief, giving up four runs, two earned, on six hits with five strikeouts, three walks and a wild pitch.
The Warriors continue league play with a three-game series against the Tigers March 5-6. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader at Warrior Softball Field is set for noon CT.
