The head investigator for the project was Dr. Bill Fantegrossi. Investigated the convulsive effects of synthetic cannabinoids and how to block these convulsive effects with other drugs. Specifically wanted to see if what was being done in hospitals actually worked in blocking these effects. When a patient is brought into the hospital with synthetic cannabinoid-induced convulsions, the common method hospitals use to treat them is to inject them with a benzodiazepine. Often, these patients have regularly been smoking synthetic cannabinoids, so to model this, they injected mice with a non-convulsant dose of pentylenetetrazole aka PTZ (a lab standard convulsant drug, but not a synthetic cannabinoid) every other day. The convulsant effects of PTZ are blocked by an injection of Diazepam, a benzodiazepine, prior to the injection of PTZ. They modeled the real life situation by injecting the mice with PTZ followed by the benzodiazepine. They found that the benzodiazepine did not block the convulsant effects of either PTZ or the synthetic cannabinoid JWH-018 in this scenario. |
