Prior to starting at Hendrix, Phillips coached at Fort Zumwalt West High School in O’Fallon, Missouri for 3 seasons. There he coached 10 sectional qualifiers in shot put, discus and javelin, as well as coaching one State finalist in the Girls Javelin with a throw of 44.98 meters.
He competed at the collegiate level at Eastern Illinois University completing his Bachelors Degree in 2021 in Computer and Information Technology degree. There he was an All-Conference competitor in the Shot Put and Hammer and led the team to four Conference Championships. He currently holds the second highest throw in Hammer in EIU’s school history with a throw of 61.63 meters (202’2” feet). In 2021, he would go on to compete in the West Regional National Qualifying meet, placing 31st in the region.
