CONWAY, Ark. – The Hendrix College volleyball team nearly knocked off Berry College, the first place team in the Southern Athletic Association, at Grove Gymnasium on Friday evening, falling 25-17, 25-27, 26-24, 21-25, 16-14. The Warriors (10-14, 3-7) had the match point serve at 14-13 in the fifth set, but the Vikings (17-3, 10-1) answered with three straight kills, including the final two from Anna Keappler to win the match.
The entire match saw 35 ties and 18 lead changes.
For the match, Hendrix hit .185 with 59 kills, six aces, a season-high 102 digs and 6.5 blocks. Berry hit .210 with 77 kills, eight aces, 102 digs and seven blocks.
Senior right side Katie Bates led Hendrix with a career-best 16 kills and senior middle blocker Melissa Clement knocked down 15 and hit .317. Junior outside hitter Katie Burchfield poste her fifth double-double of the season with 11 kills and 22 digs to go with three aces. Freshman setter Breanna Wright recorded a season-high 48 assists to go with nine digs.
Freshman libero Jill Sikes came up with 24 digs and sophomore Jasmine Johnson recorded a career-best 23 digs. Sophomore Ella Concavage-Nasar added 11.
Emily Stomberg led the Vikings with 20 kills and had 21 digs. Meredith Hopper had 15 kills and 15 digs and Keappler also registered 15 kills. Setter Stephanie Quinn had 61 assists and 18 digs and libero Jennifer Tinnell led all players with 31 digs.
Hendrix will host Oglethorpe University in league competition on Saturday at noon.
