CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College women's basketball team lost to Austin College 54-49 at Buzz Bolding Arena on Saturday night. The loss drops the Warriors to 0-8 on the year, while the Kangaroos improve to 4-6.
The visiting 'Roos had the lead from the get go, and led by as many as 11 in the first half, taking a 27-18 lead into halftime. Trailing 50-44 with 29 seconds left, Hendrix freshman guard
Estrella Flores came off the bench to hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 50-47 with 23 seconds remaining. With the Warriors forced to foul down the stretch, Austin forward Jacqui Nickell went 4-for-4 at the free throw line in the final 20 seconds. Warrior freshman
Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler hit a jumper with three seconds left to cut the final deficit to five.
For the game, the Warriors shot 31 percent (17-of-55) from the field, 4-of-17 from three-point range and 11-of-15 from the free throw line. The 'Roos shot 38 percent (18-of-47) overall, 5-of-14 from outside and 13-of-14 at the stripe. Austin also had a 37-31 rebound advantage.
Junior center
Jamie Tate paced Hendrix with 12 points, 12 rebounds and five steals. Kriesel-Bigler also had 12 points and three assists and freshman forward
Katy Gallien scored eight points and pulled down six boards.
Nickell led Austin with 13 points and three assists. Brittany Stepinsky and Erin Riley each scored 11 points and Brooke Melton recorded 11 rebounds.
Hendrix will be back in action on Sunday when they take on LaGrange College at Conway High School at 3 p.m.
