Austin Exacts Revenge on Hendrix

Freshman Alec Conard scored a season-high 20 points on Tuesday

SHERMAN, Texas – After defeating Austin College by six points in Conway on Saturday, Hendrix College could not make it two in a row, as the Kangaroos topped the Warriors 71-61 in men's basketball action at Hughey Gym on Tuesday afternoon.

The visiting Warriors (3-6) got a big boost from freshman guard Alec Conard who scored 20 points on 7-of-8 shooting, 6-of-7 from outside, in the first half. In the opening period, Hendrix shot 45 percent (13-of-29) from the field and 47 percent (8-of-17) from three-point territory, leading to a 35-35 halftime tie.

The Warriors' shooting cooled off in the second half, hitting just 30 percent (8-of-27) of their shots and only 15 percent (2-of-13) from deep. The 'Roos (2-9) led 46-44 with 11:42 left in the game, before going on a 7-0  run over the next four minutes that would give Austin control of the game.

For the game, Hendrix shot 38 percent (21-of-56), 10-of-30 from three-point range and 9-of-10 at the free throw line. Austin shot 45 percent (26-of-58), 6-of-14 from outside and 13-of-23 from the stripe. The 'Roos also had a 37-35 rebound advantage.

Conard led the Warriors with 20 points, but went 0-for-4 in the second half. The Argyle, Texas native also had a season-high seven rebounds and three blocked shots. Junior forward Colton Primm came up with 13 points and 14 rebounds for his second straight double-double. Luke Vance added 10 points and senior guard Jaren Riley had 10 points and five assists. Freshman guard Jordan Taulton dished out four assists and recorded three steals.

Ransom Okpala, who was limited to eight points on Saturday, scored 23 on 9-of-13 shooting to lead Austin. Alen Michael had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Aaron Anwary scored 12 points and had five steals.

Hendrix will travel to Shreveport, La. for a 5 p.m. tipoff at Centenary College on Wednesday.
