Warriors Open Season with Pair of Losses

RICHARDSON, Texas – The Hendrix College volleyball lost both of their matches on the first day of the 2012 season. The Warriors lost to Hardin-Simmons 25-21, 25-19, 25-19 in the opener, then fell to the UT Dallas Labor Day Tournament host 25-12, 25-15, 25-22 in the nightcap.

Against the Cowgirls, who received votes in the preseason Top 25 poll, the Warriors (0-2) hit just .096 and connected on 25 kills and had 45 digs. HSU hit .198 with 51 kills and 65 digs.

Senior middle blocker Melissa Clement paced Hendrix with seven kills and junior outside hitter Katie Burchfield had six kills and a team-best 10 digs. Junior setter Zoe Calhoun recorded 18 assists and nine digs and freshman libero Felicia Beeman came up with eight digs.

Madison Reyes led the Cowgirls with 11 kills to go with 13 digs. Christine Sas added 10 kills and 12 digs and Ashley Babineaux had 23 digs.

The Warriors struggled in the first two sets against the host Comets, hitting -.067 and .094, respectively. Hendrix rebounded to hit .306 in the third game, registering 13 kills and only two errors, but UTD held off the Warriors by landing 19 kills and clinched the final frame 25-22.

Hendrix managed to hit .122 with 28 kills to go with 42 digs and five total blocks. The Comets hit .367 with 45 kills, 46 digs and five blocks.

Senior outside hitter Katie Bates had six kills and two blocks for Hendrix and sophomore middle Carson hunter added five kills and two blocks. Freshman defensive specialist Jill Sikes led the defense with nine digs and Beeman and Burchfield came up with eight each.

Abbie Barth paced UTD with 18 kills and no errors for a .514 hitting percentage. Dana Hiltzendager had 11 kills and 11 digs and Amy Gunter recorded 13 digs. Setter Kayla Jordan posted 38 assists.

The Warriors will wrap up the Labor Day Tournament on Saturday against Mary Hardin-Baylor and LeTourneau.
