MARYVILLE, Tenn. – For the second straight match, the Hendrix College men's soccer team pitched a shutout, but this time took home a 1-0 victory against Piedmont College on Saturday. Freshman goalkeeper Marco Luna, who came up with two saves, has now started his career with two consecutive shutouts after the Warriors (1-0-1) tied Maryville College 0-0 on Friday.

“We played a fresh team after we played last night,” said Hendrix head coach Doug Mello. “We were worried about our recovery time, but  we stepped up and played hard in hot conditions today.“

The Warriors were once again dominant in possession time, as they outshot the Lions (0-1) 15-6 and had a 10-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Freshman forward Pedro Sagone scored the lone goal in the 50th minute on a passes from freshman midfielder Jacob Pierce and freshman defender John McGrath.

“Pedro can run all day long,” said Mello. “He put in a beautiful volley after the pass from Jacob.

“Defensively, two of our senior captains, Dylan Reed and Kevin Gregory, ruled the middle against strong Piedmont players. They cleared the box and helped initiate our attacks."

“In the middle (senior) Tresor Mukiza and Pierce really set the pace and distributed really well.”

Mello also praised senior Grant Womack and sophomore Greg Gandy who switched positions.

“Womack created opportunities with his skills in the midfield and Gandy played solid defense.

“Overall, it was good weekend,” Mello said. “We really came together and gelled. We have a good defense and they played really well.  However, we need to a do a better job of taking advantage of our scoring opportunities.”

The Warriors will return home to host the University of the Ozarks on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
