RICHARDSON, Texas – The Hendrix College volleyball team ended the UT Dallas Labor Day Tournament on a high note, topping LeTourneau University 25-17, 25-19, 25-19 in their final match of the weekend on Saturday. The Warriors (1-3) lost to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor 25-17, 25-23, 25-11 earlier in the day.
In the win over the YellowJackets (1-3), the Warriors hit .250 overall, including .378 with 20 kills and only three errors in the final set. Hendrix registered 46 kills for the match to go with six aces and 64 digs. LeTourneau hit .110 with 30 kills and 52 digs.
Senior middle blocker Melissa Clement paced the Hendrix offense with 13 kills and added three blocks. The Rogers, Ark. native now has 992 career kills, fifth in program history. Sophomore middle Carson Hunter hit .412 on seven kills and no errors and senior right side Kristen Finch also had seven kills. Freshman libero Jill Sikes led all players with 17 digs and four aces and Ella Concavage-Nasar and Felicia Beeman came up with 10 digs each. Freshman Breanna Wright, making her first career start, had 16 assists and junior Zoe Calhoun had 14.
The YellowJackets were led by Jo Runnels with seven kills and Alli Bordelon with 14 digs.
After dropping the first set 25-17 to the Cru (3-0) in the opener, the Warriors trailed 23-19 in the second frame. Hendrix went on a 4-0 run, including a service ace from junior Katie Burchfield and a Clement kill, but UMHB stopped the rally with a pair of kills to take the set.
For the match, the Cru hit .277 with 41 kills, 45 digs, seven aces and six blocks. The Warriors hit .099 with 28 kills, 34 digs, five aces and two blocks.
Finch and Clement each had seven kills in the match. Sikes came recorded 12 digs and three aces and Calhoun assisted 19 kills. Christina Miller led the Cru with nine kills, hit .421 and had four blocks. Elise Butler led the defense with 13 digs.
The Warriors will be back in action on Friday at the UT Tyler/Trinity Mother Frances Invitational. They will open the tournament with a rematch against UMHB.
