Senior Day Dampened by Pair of Losses

CONWAY, Ark. – The Hendrix College volleyball team lost a pair of home matches on Saturday. In the opener, the Warriors (6-11, 2-4 Southern Athletic Association) lost to Centre College (5-9, 4-2) 16-25, 25-21, 15-25, 25-23, 15-13. Hendrix then lost to non-conference rival Austin College (9-7) 25-21, 28-26, 25-18.

Before the Austin match, Hendrix honored their four seniors – right side hitter Katie Bates, middle blocker Melissa Clement, outside hitter Kristen Finch and defensive specialist Allison Helm.

Against the Colonels, the Warriors took the first set easily 25-21 by hitting .314 with 14 kills and just three errors. Centre responded with a second set victory, but Hendrix looked poised to the take the match after a 25-15 win in the third frame. Tied at 23-23 in the fourth, the Colonels put away kills for the final two points to force a fifth set.

The Warriors led 11-10 in the deciding game, but the Colonels ended the match on a 5-2 run.

Overall, Hendrix hit .155 with 49 kills, 13 aces, 73 digs and 10 blocks. Centre hit .126 with 52 kills, seven aces, 77 digs and six blocks.

Clement led the Warriors with 14 kills and with seven blocks, she added to her career school record mark that she broke on Tuesday. Bates and Finch added eight kills each and junior Katie Burchfield came up with seven kills and 15 digs. Sophomore middle Carson Hunter connected on nine kills and junior setter Zoe Calhoun recorded 42 assists. Freshman libero Jill Sikes led the defense with 23 digs and sophomore Ella Concavage-Nasar had 12.

Lydia Prevost recorded 12 kills and four blocks for the Colonels. Suzanne Asbury and Beth Cecil added 10 kills each and Jenna Foushee had 24 digs.

Against the 'Roos, the Warriors led the first set 20-19, but Austin took the game with a 6-1 run. Hendrix once again led 24-22 in the second set, but could not hold off Austin, as the 'Roos took the game 28-26.

Austin hit .220 with 47 kills, six aces, 74 digs and nine blocks, while Hendrix hit .129 with 39 kills, six aces, 72 digs and 4.5 blocks.

Hunter hit a career-best .733 with 12 kills and only one error on 15 attempts. Bates had seven kills and Calhoun recorded 33 assists. Four Warriors registered double-digit digs – Sikes with 22, Burchfield 16, Concavage-Nasar with 10 and sophomore Jasmine Johnson with a season-best 10.

Rebekah Newberry led Austin with 11 kills and six blocks. Kelly McDaniel recorded 41 assists and Adrienne Reynolds came up with 22 digs.

Hendrix will continue SAA action on Sunday when they host Sewanee at noon.
