First Place Panthers Defeat Warriors

CONWAY, Ark. – The Hendrix College men's basketball lost to Birmingham-Southern, who is tied for first in the Southern Athletic Association, 78-60 on Friday at Grove Gymnasium.

The Warriors (5-11, 0-5) were down seven just three and a half minutes into the game, but went on 14-6 run over the next six minutes to go up 18-17 with 10:37 left in the first half. The Panthers (12-3, 5-0) responded by outscoring the Warriors 23-10 the rest of the period and took a 40-28 lead into halftime. BSC continued their onslaught in the second half and would lead by as many as 23.

Hendrix committed 23 turnovers on 14 BSC steals, leading to 21 points off turnovers and a 22-4 advantage in fastbreak points for the Panthers. Birmingham-Southern also dominated the inside game, outscoring Hendrix 42-24 in the paint.

For the game, the Warriors shot 44 percent (22-of-50), 6-of-17 from three-point range and 10-of-15 at the free throw line. The Panthers shot 50 percent (28-of-56), 5-of-14 from outside and 17-of-24 at the striple. Hendrix had a 33-30 rebound edge.

Freshman guard Jordan Taulton dished out a season-best six assists and had one steal for the Warriors. Sophomore forward Luke Vance scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Andy Gram and senior guard Jaren Riley had nine points each. Freshmen Drew Nikolovski and Alec Conard both added eight.

Larry Thomas paced the Panthers with 21 points on 8-of-13 shooting. Zac Richards had 13 points and 13 rebounds.

Hendrix will return to action on Sunday when they host conference rival Millsaps College at 3 p.m.
