Victory Evades Warriors in Georgia

ATLANTA – The Hendrix College women's basketball team lost to Oglethorpe University 62-59 in Southern Athletic Association action at Dorough Field House on Friday night. With the loss, the visiting Warriors fall to 0-12 on the year and 0-2 in league play, while the Lady Petrels improve to 3-10 and 1-1.

Despite shooting 20 percent (6-of-30) in the first half, Hendrix only trailed 22-17 at the break. OU expanded their lead to 30-23 with 15:33 left to play, but the Warriors hit back-to-back three-pointers by freshmen Katy Gallien and Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler in the next 34 seconds to reduce to deficit to one.

From there, the Warriors and Petrels exchanged ties and marginal leads until Hendrix took a 52-49 lead  at the 6:45 mark after a put-back by junior center Jamie Tate. Oglethorpe answered by outscoring Hendrix 11-2 over the next 5:20, taking a 60-54 advantage with 1:25 to play. Kriesel-Bigler hit a three-pointer at the 1:16 mark to cut the margin to three.

Tate missed a basket with 23 seconds left and the Lady Petrels got the rebound and made a pair of free throws to go up 62-57 with 17 seconds left. Tate scored the final bucket of the game with six seconds remaining.

For the game, the Warriors shot 34 percent (21-of-61), went 8-of-29 from three-point range and 9-of-14 at the free throw line. The Lady Petrels shot 38 percent (22-of-58), 6-of-19 from outside and 12-of-15 from the stripe. Hendrix had a 45-32 rebound advantage, but OU recorded 14 steals, leading to 19 Warrior turnovers.

Kriesel-Bigler recorded a season-high 20 points, hitting six long range shots, to go with three assists to lead Hendrix. Tate picked up her seventh double-double of the year with 18 points and 18 rebounds. Junior forward Katie Coughran added eight points and a career-best 12 rebounds and Gallien ended up with seven points and three boards.

Sarah Giles paced OU with 20 points, 12 rebounds and four steals. Kalin Willimas had 15 points and six steals and Gabby Cole chipped in 14 points.

Hendrix will wrap up their trip to the Peach State when they face conference foe Berry College on Sunday.
