MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The most successful season in program history came to an end for the Hendrix College volleyball team in the Southern Athletic Association Tournament finals. The Warriors (20-12) lost to the top seed and host Berry College (24-7) 25-21, 25-13, 16-25, 18-25, 25-11.
Hendrix finishes with a prorgram record 20 wins and had the only winning season in the program's history.
The Vikings took the first two sets, but the Warriors won the next two to force the fifth set. Berry jumped out to a 6-1 run to control the fifth set early. At 14-7, Hendrix went on a 4-0 run, before a service error gave Berry the win.
For the match, Hendrix hit .186 with 52 kills, six aces, 76 digs and 14 blocks. Berry hit .146 with 53 kills, 11 aces, 64 digs and 10 blocks.
Freshman outside hitter
MC Rogers, who was named to the all-tournament team, led the Warriors with 19 kills and hit .425 to go with four blocks. Senior outside
Katie Burchfield, also named to the all-tourney team, had 18 kills and nine digs. Freshman right side
Natalie Masten came up with six kills, hit .462 and had four blocks as well.
Defensively, sophomore liberos Frelicia Beeman and
Jill Sikes had 13 and 12 digs respectively. Both setters for Hendrix recorded double-dubles. Freshman
Allison Gaia had 23 assists and a season-high 13 digs and senior
Zoe Calhoun had 19 assists and 10 digs. Freshman middle blocker
Grace Griffin tied her season-best with eight total blocks, four of which were solo.
Katie O'Rourke led Berry with 15 kills and eight blocks. Emily Stromberg added 10 kills and 14 digs and Anna Keappler had 10 kills and nine digs. Setter Stephanie Quinn, the SAA Player of the Year, had 44 assist and 14 digs.
The match was the final in the career for two Warrior seniors - Burchfield and Calhoun.
