Hendrix Downs Blackburn 84-62 for First Win

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Hendrix College women's basketball team picked up their first win of the 2013-14 campaign with an 84-62 victory over Blackburn College at the Rhodes Tip-Off Classic on Sunday.

The Warriors (1-1), under first-year interim head coach Drew Gaeng, shot 40.5 percent (30-of-74) from the field, went 6-of-21 from three-point range and 18-of-27 from the free throw line. The Beavers (0-2) shot 29 percent  (15-of-52), 2-of-9 from outside and 30-of-45 from the line. Hendrix held a 49-44 rebound advantage and the defense recorded 19 steals.

The Warriors led by as many as 16 in the first half, before taking a 43-30 lead into the break. The Beavers cut the lead to seven with 18:33 to play, but the Orange & Black answered with a 34-9 run over the next 10 minutes to go up 77-45.

Freshman guard Taylor Neal led Hendrix with 22 points, shooting 7-of-12 from the field and 4-of-7 from three-point range. Freshman forward Anna King had 19 points and freshman guard Peyton Hurst chipped in 10. Senior center Jamie Tate scored seven points to go with 15 rebounds and freshman point guard Melanie Martin dished out nine assists and had five steals.

Ciara Morgan led the Beavers with 13 points. Danique Smith had 12 points and Shelby Smith had 11 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Briana Rae recorded nine points and nine boards.

Hendrix will travel to Longview, Texas on Friday to face LeTourneau University.
