Hendrix Erases 15-Point Deficit

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College women's basketball team overcame a 15-point deficit with just over 10 minutes to play to defeat Schreiner University 64-61 in the final game of the La Quinta Inn & Suites Holiday Classic on Monday afternoon.

The visiting Mountaineers (5-6) led 54-39 with 10:16 left in the game, but the Warriors (5-6) ended the game on a 25-7 run. Hendrix took their first lead of the second half when sophomore point guard Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler buried a three-pointer to make it 63-61 with 1:04 left.

Schreiner guard Bailey Harris missed a pair of free throws that would tie the game with 34.8 seconds reamaining. Senior center Jamie Tate grabbed the rebound, her 18th of the game, and freshman guard Peyton Hurst made a free throw with 23 seconds left to go up by three points. The Mountaineers took two shots in the final seconds, but came up short.

SU led 34-26 at halftime. Hendrix shot just 30 percent in the first period, but made 50 percent of their shots in the second half.

For the game, the Warriors shot 38.6 percent (22-of-57) from the field, 4-of-14 from outside and 16-of-26 from the free throw line. The Mountaineers shot 37.5 percent (18-of-48) overall, 2-of-10 from three-point range and 23-of-30 at the stripe. Hendrix had a 40-33 rebounding edge.

Kriesel-Bigler led the Warriors with 12 points and had three assists. Senior forward Katie Coughran, freshman guard Taylor Neal and freshman forward Anna King each had 10 points. Hurst finished wigth eight rebounds and four assists. Tate had five points and three assists to go with her 18 boards, tied for the ninth most in school history. Sophomore forward Katy Gallien came off the bench to add four points and four assists.

Lindsey Peterson and Kelsie Jackson each scored 20 points for SU. Harris had 10 points.

Hendrix will return to action on Saturday when they host Centenary College of Louisiana at 2 p.m.
