Warriors Upset Colonels, Move on to Semis

JACKSON, Miss. – The Hendrix College women's basketball team hung on to upset Centre College 69-68 in overtime in the first round of the Southern Athletic Association Tournament at the HangarDome on Friday night.

The sixth-seeded Warriors (5-21), who have won four of their last five games, move on to the semi-finals, where they will face #2 Rhodes at 8 p.m. on Saturday.

Hendrix led 61-55 in the second half with 3:19 remaining before the third-seeded Colonels (14-11) cut the lead down to 61-60 with 56 seconds left in regulation. Warrior guard Estrella Flores made one of two free throws with 12 seconds left to go up by two, but Centre forward Chelsea Benham scored with five seconds left to force overtime.

In the extra frame, Flores once again went one of two at the line two at the line with seven seconds left and Benham grabbed the rebound. However, the Colonels turned the ball over with four seconds remaining and Hendrix ran out the clock to win the game.

For the game, the Warriors shot 37 percent (22-of-59) overall, 5-of-16 from outside and 20-of-29 at the free throw line. The Colonels shot 43.5 percent (27-of-62), 3-of-21 from outside and 11-of-15 from the stripe.

Hendrix got a big boost from Flores and junior guard Kaitlin McNeill off the bench. Flores led all players with 15 points, hitting two three-pointers and going 7-of-10 at the line. McNeill scored 12 points, went 8-of-12 at the free throw line, and grabbed six rebounds. Junior forward Katie Coughran added nine points and junior center Jamie Tate scored eight points and grabbed nine rebounds. Freshman forward Katy Gallien also had eight points and six boards. Freshman guard Caitlin Kreisel-Bigler scored six points and registered four steals. Kati Broberg netted six points and Lindsay Drillette came off the bench to add five.

Maggie Hartlage led Centre with 14 points to go with eight rebounds. Benham had 12 points and nine boards and Alexis Guy scored 11.
