MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Hendrix College field hockey team suffered an 8-1 defeat at the hands of ninth-ranked Christopher Newport University at Macon Field on Saturday afternoon. The game was the first of the season for the Warriors and first-year head coach Rebecca Begley.

The Captains (1-0) outshot the Warriors 70-5, including 51-3 in shots on goal. Warrior freshman keeper Gabryele Pochron still managed to stop 84% of the shots she faced, as she recorded 42 saves, breaking the old school record of 20. The number of saves is also tied for the ninth-most in NCAA Division III history and the most since in the nation since 2007.

Senior defender Elizabeth Lancaster recorded a defensive save. Freshman forward Raychl Reger scored Hendrix' only goal in the 23rd minute on a pass from junior forward Morgan Fires.

CNU jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first 14 minutes. After Reger found the cage, the Captains added three more goals to take a 6-1 lead into half.

Taylor Young led CNU with two goals.

Hendrix will return to action on Sunday when they face #6 University of Mary Washington at 10 a.m. in Memphis.
