Hendrix Blanks Westminster to Open Season

Sophomore goalkeeper Marco Luna recorded his eighth career shutout on Friday

CONWAY, Ark. - Sophomore midfielder Jacob Pierce scored a goal and sophomore keeper Marco Luna stopped four shots, including a penalty kick, to help the Hendrix College men's soccer team to a 1-0 shutout of Westminster College in the 2013 opener at Warrior Field on Friday night.

Pierce, from Fulton, Mo., took five shots, with two on goal, and found the net on a direct kick after a foul in the 38th minute to give the Warriors (1-0) the victory

Luna, of Guatemala City, recorded a beautiful save on Blue Jays' (0-1) Michael McDonough penalty kick in the 19th minute. The shutout was the eighth of Luna's career, one off Kyle Beene's (2004-07) Hendrix career record of nine.

Sophomore forward Will Dunaway attempted three shots and sophomore forward Steven Cochrun took two for the Warriors.

Caleb Marquis had one save for Westminster.

For the game, the Warriors out shot the Blue Jays 11-10.

Hendrix will travel to St. Louis, Mo. to take on Washington University on Sunday at 7 p.m.
