CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College volleyball opened the 2013 campaign by winning two matches on the first day of the Hendrix Labor Day Invitational at Grove Gymnasium on Friday. The Warriors (2-0) started by sweeping Philander Smith College 25-22, 25-21, 25-20, then downed LeTourneau University 25-23, 23-25, 25-14, 25-23.
Against the Lady Panthers (0-4) in the opener, the Warriors hit .272 with 43 kills, 12 service aces, 35 digs and five total blocks. Hendrix set the pace in the first set by hitting .407. Freshman outside hitter MC Rogers led the offense with 13 kills and hit .348, while senior outside Katie Burchfield had 12 kills and .417 with six digs. Freshman setter Allison Gaia recorded 20 assists and three aces. Sophomore Jill Sikes led Hendrix with six aces and eight digs.
PSC was led by Zyra Wright with 10 kills, three aces and eight digs. As team, the Lady Panthers hit .153 with 24 kills, nine aces, 26 digs and three blocks.
In the nightcap, Hendrix hit .268 with 59 kills, eight aces, 69 digs and five blocks. The Lady Jackets (1-1) hit .167 with 41 kills, nine aces, 65 digs and three blocks.
Burchfield hit .395 with 17 kills and 13 digs for the 12th double-double of her career. Rogers posted 12 kills and three total blocks and freshman middle blocker Jen Karnes hit .611 with 11 kills and no errors on 18 attempts. Freshman right side hitter Natalie Msten also added 11 kills. Junior libero Ella Concavage-Nasar came up with 23 digs and four aces and senior setter Zoe Calhoun had 32 assists.
LeTourneau was led by Kayla Ronda with 12 kills to go with 13 digs. Sarah Krippner assisted 33 kills with 15 digs and Dolores Kroese came up with 10 kills. Alli Bordelon led the defense with 16 digs.
Hendrix will close the tournament on Saturday at noon against Centenary (La.) and at 4 p.m. versus Lyon.
