Warriors Fall to Petrels in Double Overtime

CONWAY, Ark. - The Hendrix College men's basketball team fell to Oglethorpe University 70-69 on a free throw with 0.2 seconds left in the second overtime in Southern Athletic Association competition at Grove Gymnasium Friday night.

The visiting Stormy Petrels (12-1, 2-0), who are receiving votes in the D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll, led 24-20 at halftime and built a second half lead to 34-24 with 15:59 left in the second period. The Warriors (6-7, 0-2) answered with a 16-0 run, including eight consecutive points from sophomore forward Will Roland, over the next seven minutes to go up 40-34.

OU's Tyler Courson hit back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game at 40 with 6:52 left in regulation. From there, the teams would exchange leads and ties, until a free throw by forward Victor Rohlfs gave the Stormy Petrels a 51-49 lead with 24 seconds left. Hendrix senior forward Colton Primm tied the game on a lay-up with an assist from junior forward Luke Vance with 11 seconds remaining. Drew Patrick's shot at the end of the half was blocked by Warrior guard Hank Aldous to force overtime.

In the first extra period, the teams exchanged leads six times and were tied four. Rohlfs put OU up 60-58 with 36 seconds left, but sophomore guard Jordan Barrett answered with a drive to the bucket with 21 seconds left to make the game 60-60. The Petrels turned the ball over with three seconds left and the Warriors' three-pointer at the buzzer fell short.

In the second overtime, a second free throw by Alex Davis with 1:02 left put OU up 69-67. A pass from sophomore point guard to Jordan Taulton to Vance led to a tying bucket at 41 seconds left. The Petrels failed to score on their next possession giving the Warriors with ball. Barrett drove to the rim for a layup, but missed with contact on the play and no foul was called.

Davis grabbed the rebound and was fouled while shooting a desperation three-pointer at half court with 0.2 seconds left. Davis sank one of his three shots to win the game for the Stormy Petrels.

For the game, Hendrix shot 36 percent (25-of-69) from the field, 4-of-25 from outside and 15-of-30 at the free throw line. Oglethorpe shot 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the floor, 7-of-16 from three-point territory and 17-of-29 at the stripe. The Warriors held a 54-45 rebounding edge.

Vance collected 17 points, 13 rebounds, three assists and two blocks for his first double-double of the season. Sophomore guard Drew Nikolovski hit all four of the Warriors' three-pointers, leading to 18 points to go with eight boards. Roland finished with 11 points and seven rebounds and Primm had nine points and six boards. Barrett added seven points and three assists. Aldous and freshman Gabe Gumm each assisted four baskets.

Davis led OU with 19 points to go with six assists and eight rebounds. Patrick had 16 points and nine rebounds and Rohlfs recorded 13 points, 10 boards, three blocks and two steals. Courson, who was averaging 19 points a game entering the contest, was held to 11 points.

Hendrix will return to the floor on Sunday when they host SAA rival Berry College at 3 p.m.
