JACKSON, Miss. - The Hendrix College women's basketball lost 53-48 to Southern Athletic Association foe Millsaps College at the HangarDome on Sunday afternoon.
The host Majors (10-6, 4-2) led the entire first half, taking a 20-14 lead into the break. They expanded their advantage to as many nine with 14:50 left before the Warriors (7-10, 1-5) started chipping into the deficit. With Millsaps leading 36-33 with 7:51 to play, sophomore guard
Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler sunk back-to-back three-pointers to put Hendrix up 39-36 with 5:51 remaining.
The teams would exchange a few ties and leads until the final minute of the game. A layup by Sam Perez gained Millsaps a 47-46 lead with 54 seconds left. Kala Freeman stole the ball and scored to put the Majors up 49-46 with 22 seconds left. Kriesel-Bigler hit a jumper at the top of the key with 16 seconds left to cut the deficit to one. Velvet Johnson hit four free throws for the Majors in the final 15 seconds to secure the victory.
For the game, Hendrix shot 32 percent (18-of-56) from the field, 6-of-20 from three-point territory and 6-of-13 at the free throw line. Millsaps shot 35.4 percent (17-of-48) overall, 1-of-6 from outside and 18-of-26 at the stripe. The Majors held a 38-36 rebounding edge.
Freshman guard
Taylor Neal led the Warriors with 18 points and a season-high five assists. Kriesel-Bigler finished with 11 points. Senior forward Katie Cougrhan had nine points, eight rebounds and two steals and senior center
Jamie Tate came down with seven boards.
Johnson paced the Majors with 18 points and went 10-for-10 at the free throw line. Perez finished with 12 points and four assists. Freeman recorded nine points, 11 rebounds and three steals and Miah Brooks had six points and 13 boards.
Hendrix will return home on Friday for a conference matchup with Centre College.
