Warriors' Streak Snapped at Washington

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - After beginning their season with four consecutive wins, the Hendrix College football team saw their winning streak snapped by Washington University in a 59-19 loss on Saturday.

Steve Crenshaw kicked a Southern Athletic Association record four field goals, connecting on kicks from 33, 32, 26, and 30 yards out. Crenshaw's big day snaps the previous conference record shared by Centre's Jordan Gay in a 2012 contest against Millsaps and Millsaps' Beau Brady, set in 2013 against Mississippi College. Both Brady and Gay had kicked three field goals in a game.

Jake Steward led the Warrior defense with nine tackles, while Harrison Newton earned five tackles and recorded the team's only sack of the day. Nine different defenders registered a tackle for loss on defense.

Spencer Smith paced the Hendrix receiving corps with six catches for 63 yards on the day, while Casey Caton snagged six catches for 40 yards. Dayton Winn was held under 100 yards rushing for the first time this season. The sophomore tallied 80 yards rushing and a touchdown on 27 carries.

The Warriors struggled to generate an offense in the first quarter, and were held scoreless for the first 15 minutes. On six first quarter drives, Hendrix was forced to punt four times, fumbled, and missed a field goal. In the second quarter, Dayton Winn put the visiting squad on the board with a one-yard touchdown run that capped a 14-play, 79-yard drive. Meanwhile, the Bears scored on six of their first seven possessions, and seven of their nine possession in the first half to take a commanding 45-10 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Hendrix opened the scoring with a Crenshaw field goal, capitalizing on a Washington turnover. Crenshaw's second successful kick of the day made the score 45-13 but was answered by two Washington touchdowns off of Hendrix turnovers. Crenshaw capped the third quarter with another field goal, making the score 59-16 at the end of three.

In the fourth quarter, the Warriors' defense kept the Bears from increasing their lead forcing a punt and two turnovers on downs on three Washington possessions. Crenshaw hit his record-setting fourth field goal of the day, capping a 10-play, 47- yard drive for the visiting squad.

Washington improves to 2-4 on the season and will take on Maranatha Baptist on Saturday, October 18. Hendrix suffers their first loss of the season, moving to 4-1 on the year. The Warriors will look to remain undefeated in the Southern Athletic Association on Saturday, October 18 when they travel to Mount Berry, Ga. to take on the Berry College Vikings.
