GRANVILLE, Ohio - The Hendrix College field hockey team came within inches of tying the game and sending it into extra time, but a defensive save by Denison University preserved the home team's win as the Warriors fell 2-1 to the Big Red.
Gabryele Pochron made 13 saves in net for the Warriors and was helped out by senior defender
Lauren Shklanko who made a defensive save. Audrey Miller-Foreman made just one save in net for the Big Red but was bailed out  by Jane Higley who stopped the potential game-tying goal.
In the first half, the Big Red jumped all over the Warriors, holding Hendrix without a shot. Pochron and the Warriors' defense held strong through the offensive barrage from Denison, allowing just one first half goal. In the seventh minute, Abby Martone scored off of a rebound, giving the home team a 1-0 advantage.
In the second frame, Hendrix staved off the Denison offense for most of the period, but allowed a goal on a penalty corner in the 60th minute. Molly Chapman found the goal on a set play that put the Big Red ahead 2-0 with just over 10 minutes to play.
In the final 10 minutes of the game, the Hendrix offense started to gain steam and in the 65th minute,
Debbie Crawford found the net for the second time in two games. The junior was denied on her first attempt, but gathered the rebound off of the goalie's pads and buried it to cut into the Denison lead, making it 2-1.
With barely any time remaining, Hendrix pressed even harder for the equalizer and had a pair of great opportunities in the final seconds of the game. The squad earned a pair of penalty corners with no time remaining on the clock for the last chance to tie the game. On their first attempt
Lauren Shklanko played it into
Erika Jasso, who teed up the ball for
Morgan Fires. Her shot rocketed off of a Denison defender, giving the Warriors another chance. On the second opportunity, Hendrix dialed up the same play. Fires beat the goalie and seemed destined to tie the game, but Denison defender Jane Higley got her stick on the ball before it found the net and cleared the threat to end the game. Â
The Warriors fall to 2-12 on the season and will return to action on Saturday, October 25th when they host SAA foe Rhodes College in their final home game of the season.
