SEWANEE, Tenn. - Hendrix College ended their second season of football since 1960 with a 6-4 record after defeating Sewanee - The University of the South 34-11 at Harris Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Warriors move to 3-3 in Southern Athletic Association play, tying for third place with Birmingham-Southern. The Tigers end the year 2-8 overall and 1-5 in league play.
The victory total was the first time Hendrix reached six wins since 1937.
Hendrix marched their first drive of the game 75 yards over 13 plays, capped off by a five-yard run by freshman tailback
Mike Goodrich. Sewanee made the game 7-3 on a Callum Wishart 26-yard field goal with 3:13 left in the opening quarter.
Sophomore tailback managed both of the touchdowns in the second quarter for the Orange & Black with a two-yard run and an 18-yard pass from sophomore
Seth Peters. The Warriors led 20-3 at halftime.
Peters found senior wide receiver
Casey Caton for a four-yard score to go up 27-3 with 5:47 in the third quarter.
Sewanee finally found the endzone with 12:31 left in the game on a Devante Jones eight yard rush. Stephen Jackson caught a pass from Powers Spencer on the conversion to make the game 27-11. Peters scored the final touchdown of the game, a seven-yard scramble with 9:50 left in the game.
Hendrix tallied 421 yards of offense on 77 plays for a 5.5 average. They had 252 yards on the ground and 187 through the air with 24 first downs. Sewanee ran 53 plays for 273 yards - 228 of which were rushing. The Tigers were held to 13 first downs.
Winn rushed 23 times for 141 yards - his sixth time passing the 100-yard mark this season. The Pea Ridge, Ark. native also finished the season with 1,055 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Peters was 16-of-24 passing with 187 yards and two touchdowns. Caton had four catches for 53 yards and ended his two-year career with 104 catches, 1,671 yards and 11 scores.
Defensively, sophomore defensive end
Harrison Newton recorded a career-high nine solo tackles - two for a loss, and one sack. Sophomore
Brett Asher had eight tackles - two for a loss, and forced two fumbles. Sophomore linebacker
Ben Cunningham added seven stops and sophomore safety
Jake Steward had six tackles and a sack for a loss of seven yards.
Ben Griffin led the Tigers with 19 carries and 68 yards.
