Berry Ends Hendrix' Win Streak

MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - For the second time this season, the Hendrix College women's basketball team had a four-game winning streak ended by Southern Athletic Association foe Berry College. The Vikings (12-11, 5-7) ended the Warriors' (11-12, 5-7) streak on Jan. 12 in Conway, and did it again on Sunday by the score of 63-58 at the Cage Center.

After Sunday, both Hendrix and Berry are tied for fifth in the SAA with two games to play before the conference tournament. The Vikings hold the tiebreaker over the Warriors.

Hendrix struggled shooting in the first half, only making 28.1 percent (9-of-32) of their shots and going 0-for-2 from outside. Berry led 28-20 at half.

The Vikings extended their lead to 42-28 with 12:57 to play, but the Warriors slowly chipped away at the margin, and a layup from sophomore point guard Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler cut the deficit to 54-53 with 1:35 left.

A three-point play by Mel McLean 29 seconds later put Berry back up by four with 1:06 remaining. A bucket from Warrior sophomore forward Katy Gallien at 43 seconds on the clock made the game 57-55. Emma Cook, Megan Walsh and McLean each made a pair of free throws for the Vikings in the final 39 seconds, while the Warriors only managed a free throw from senior center Jamie Tate and basket from Kriesel-Bigler at the end of the game.

For the game, Hendrix shot 35.9 percent (23-of-64) from the field, 1-of-7 from three-point range and 11-of-18 at the free throw line. Berry shot 39.7 percent (23-of-58) overall, 3-of-14 from outside and 14-of-17, including a perfect 11-of-11 in the second half, at the stripe. The teams were even with 41 rebounds each.

Kriesel-Bigler led the Orange & Black with 17 points and pulled down six rebounds. Freshman guard Taylor Neal scored 11 points and freshman forward Anna King had nine points, nine boards and two blocks off the bench. Tate managed five points and 10 rebounds. Senior forward Katie Coughran added four points and and Gallien recorded four points, four boards and three assists. Freshman guard Peyton Hurst scored six.

McLean was high scorer for the Vikings with 19 points to go with nine rebounds. Walsh had 16 points, 13 rebounds and a pair of steals.

Hendrix will travel to Centre College for a league matchup on Friday night.
