CONWAY, Ark. - Senior forward
Jamie Tate scored 10 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, becoming the 14th player in Hendrix College women's basketball history to reach 1,000 points for her career as the Warriors defeated Millsaps College 57-54 in Southern Athletic Association play at home on Sunday.
Tate, from Nashville, Tenn., now has 1,002 points and 1,180 rebounds for her career, making her the only Warrior to reach that milestone.
With the win, the Warriors improve to 10-11 overall and 4-6 in league play, while the Majors fall to 12-8 and 6-4.
Hendrix started the game with a 9-0 lead over the first 2:43, but Millsaps answered with a 21-2 run to go 21-11 with 9:49 left in the first period. The Orange & Black fought back and trailed just 27-23 at halftime.
The second half saw three ties and seven lead changes. With the Majors up 39-38 with 11:35 to play, the Warriors had a 12-4 run, capped by a
Taylor Neal three-pointer to make the game 50-43 at the 4:47 mark. Millsaps cut the margin to just one point twice in the final minute, including a Sam Perez three-pointer with three seconds left to put the game at 55-54. Fouled with 0.5 seconds on the clock, Neal secured the win for the Warriors with a pair of free throws.
For the game, Hendrix shot 38.9 percent (21-of-54) from the field, 4-of-8 from outside and 11-of-15 at the free throw line. Millsaps shot 40.4 percent (21-of-52) overall, 2-of-10 from three-point range and 10-of-11 at the stripe. The Warriors held a 35-31 rebounding edge.
Neal led the Warriors with 18 points and senior forward
Katie Coughran had 14 points. Sophomore point guard
Caitlin Kriesel-Bigler scored eight points and dished out five assists and sophomore forward
Katy Gallien had seven points and five assists.
Perez led the Majors with 27 points on 12-of-17 shooting and five assists. Kala Freeman had 12 points and 13 boards and Velvet Johnson recorded eight points, five rebounds and three assists.
Hendrix, who played their last home game of the year on Sunday, will play at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta on Friday.
