Warriors Split to Open 2014 Season

RICHARDSON, Texas - The Hendrix College volleyball team split their first matches of the 2014 season on Friday at the UT Dallas Labor Day Tournament. The Warriors (1-1) opened with a 25-22, 25-13, 28-26, 25-17 loss to host University of Texas Dallas, but rebounded to take down East Texas Baptist University 20-25, 25-22, 27-25, 25-17.

In the win against the Tigers, Hendrix hit .224 with 62 kills, eight aces, 57 digs and nine total blocks. ETBU had 48 kills and hit .237 with four aces, 45 digs and 13 blocks.

Sophomore outside hitter MC Rogers connected on a career-high 24 kills, while hitting .327 and compiling 11 digs and four blocks to lead the Warriors. Freshman right side Lauren Petrisin added 14 kills and freshman middle blocker Sara Dyslin had nine kills and hit .350. On defense, junior Felicia Beeman came up with 22 digs and sophomore Leila Matsumoto recorded 11. Sophomore Allison Gaia had 27 assists and sophomore setter Marlee Matlock registered career-highs with 19 assists and four aces.

Mallory Sanders paced the Tigers with 16 kills, while Kailey Cavanaugh and Adaeze Elonu each had 10. Elonu also had nine total blocks. Hannah Jones came up with 14 digs and Kayla Taylor posted 23 assists.

Against the Comets, who were receiving votes in the AVCA Preseason Top 25, Hendrix hit .184 with 53 kills, eight aces, 57 digs and eight blocks. UTD hit .217 with 52 kills, two aces, 60 digs and six blocks.

Dyslin had monstrous debut for the Orange & Black, recording 15 kills and five blocks while hitting .480. Freshman outside hitter Bradi Ryan and sophomore right side both added 12 kills each. Gaia recorded a career-best 41 assists and senior libero Ella Concavage-Nasar had 15 digs and four aces. Matsumoto added 10 digs.

The Warriors will wrap up the tournament against Hardin-Simmons University at 10 a.m. on Saturday.
