Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Hendrix College field hockey team played steadfast defense for a full 70 minutes, but it wasn't enough to stop Southern Athletic Association rival Rhodes' offense from scoring as the Lynx beat the Warriors 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in Memphis.
Gabryele Pochron and the Hendrix defense held the Lynx scoreless through the first half, despite being outshot. Pochron was assisted by
Lauren Shklanko who made a defensive save that kept Rhodes off the board before the half. The Warriors' offense was kept without a shot in the first period and managed just one penalty corner in the frame.
In the second half, the Rhodes offense continued to apply pressure. The Lynx finally cracked the Hendrix defense in the 41st minute when Shauni Cowan scored off an assist from Mary Rose Hazel. The goal put the Lynx up 1-0 in the early minutes of the second half.
The Warriors generated some offense in the second half. Trailing 1-0, the team played with a sense of urgency.
Sarah Shklanko earned the team's best scoring opportunity off of a penalty corner. The freshman ripped a pair of point blank shots, but both were turned away by Rhodes golatender Laura Eckelkamp. Hendrix leading scorer
Raychl Reger also had a shot on goal in the second frame but could not convert as the Warriors were held scoreless.
In the final minutes, Rhodes was awarded a penalty stroke and Kennedy Brislin stepped up to bury the shot, giving Rhodes an important insurance goal and raising their lead to 2-0. The Warriors attempted to push the tempo and find a late goal, but could not find the net as the Lynx earned the 2-0 win.
