Box Score MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Hendrix College field hockey team suffered a narrow defeat on Thursday, falling 3-1 to Washington and Lee University in a neutral site game hosted by Rhodes College.
Hendrix was outshot 31-5 on the day, but sophomore
Gabryele Pochron kept the Warriors in the game by making a season-high 21 saves for the squad, tying her own record for sixth most in program history. Despite her efforts, Pochron took the loss in net. Washington and Lee goalkeeper Megan Axelrod made three saves on her way to a victory between the pipes.
Hendrix earned the first quality opportunity of the game just four minutes into play when the team earned a penalty corner. The squad had a chance to score, but failed to register a shot on the play. Just over two minutes later, the Generals found paydirt with Candice Stefanic notching her second goal of the year to put Washington and Lee ahead 1-0.
In the 28th minute, the Generals added onto their lead, scoring off of a penalty corner. Abby Avery served the corner into the shooting zone and Allie Barry finished the play with a goal, putting Washington and Lee ahead 2-0.
In the second half, Washington and Lee nearly took a three-goal advantage, but
Bridget Umble and
Madi Reese each made a defensive save to keep the Warriors within striking distance.
The Warriors regrouped and launched an offensive that resulted in a goal late in the frame.
Lauren Shklanko delivered a penalty corner to the top of the key where
Morgan Fires and
Erika Jasso were set up. The ball found its way to
Raychl Reger who beat the Generals' goalie and fired a shot on goal. Her first attempt was stopped by a Washington and Lee defender, but the forward stayed with the play and finished off the rebound to put Hendrix on the board and cut the lead to 2-1.
The Warriors extended their defense in an attempt to pressure the Generals into a mistake, but Washington and Lee maintained their composure and notched an insurance goal in the final seconds to make the final score 3-1.
Hendrix falls to 0-3 on the season and they will travel to Salisbury, Md. to take part in the Salisbury University Invitational. The Warriors will face a pair of undefeated teams over the weekend, taking on Wesley College on Friday at 7 p.m. Eastern and #2 Salisbury University at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday.
