MOUNT BERRY, Ga. - The Hendrix College volleyball team advanced to the NCAA Division III Tournament Quarterfinals by defeating #2 Emory University 25-23, 27-25, 21-25, 22-25, 15-13 in the Regional Finals at the Cage Center Saturday night.
The Warriors (28-8) will open the Elite 8 in Grand Rapids, Mich. on Friday against Bethel University of Minnesota.
Hendrix held off Emory (35-3) in the first set 25-23, but the second set was a battle. With both teams tied 24-24, the Eagles served for set point after a bad set by the Warriors. The Orange & Black came back with kills from
Bradi Ryan and
Sara Dyslin, plus an EU error to win 27-25.
The Eagles managed to take the next two sets to force the deciding frame. At 7-7 in the fifth, the Warriors went on a 5-0 run, featuring a pair of kills by junior outside hitter
MC Rogers and an ace by junior setter
Allison Gaia.
Emory answered with four straight points to make it 12-11 in the Warriors' favor. Back-to-back kills from Rogers and
Lauren Petrisin gave Hendrix match point. The Eagles won the next two points, but Petrisin recorded the final kill to give Hendrix the 15-13 win.
For the match, Hendrix hit .205 with 69 kills, eight aces, 81 digs and 10 blocks. Emory hit .243 with 61 kills, three aces, 80 digs and 11 blocks.
Dyslin was named the Regional Most Outstanding Player. Rogers and senior libero
Felicia Beeman were also selected to the All-Tournament Team.
Hendrix Notes- Emory is the highest-ranked opponent Hendrix has defeated in program history. The Warriors beat #4 Carthage earlier this season.
- Rogers recorded 20 or more kills and digs for the second straight night with 21 kills and 22 digs. Her kills total was her season best. She also managed five blocks.
- Beeman came up with 23 digs and three aces.
- Dyslin hit .333 with 16 kills and five blocks.
- Sophomore
Bradi Ryan connected on 13 kills and Petrisin finished with 10.
- Gaia had 34 assists and 10 digs for her 11th double-double of the season.
- Junior setter
Holyn Duyck added 21 assists.
Emory Notes- Emory was the national runner-up in 2014.
- Jessica Holler led the Eagles with 15 kills and six blocks.
- Karissa Dzurik had 14 kills.
- Sydney Miles hit .727 with eight kills, 47 assists and eight digs.
- Becky Breuer led all players with 25 digs.
