Pitching and Timely Hitting Lead Warriors to Win

FRISCO, Texas - The Hendrix College baseball team put together nine innings of solid pitching, and received a handful of clutch hits to earn a 3-1 victory over Carleton College on Friday afternoon at Dr. Pepper Ballpark in Frisco.

Will Nichol earned the win, tossing six strong innings for the Warriors and recording a career-high six strikeouts. The pitcher allowed one earned run on a pair of hits, one walk, and one hit batsman. Baker Helton, Cannon Schrank, and Harley Faye combined to throw three scoreless innings of relief, with Faye picking up the save, striking out the side in the ninth.

The Warriors struck first, putting up two runs in the bottom of the first. Drew Judson led off with a walk and was brought home on a Ryan Ritz double. Two batters later, Matt Simmons came 10 feet short of a home run, driving a high fly ball to the warning track, but the senior had to settle for a sacrifice fly, scoring Ritz from third.

Carleton responded with a run in the top of the second. Nichol allowed a leadoff double and the Knights brought their leadoff man around to score with a seeing-eye single two batters later. The Hendrix starter prevented any further damage with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning.

In the seventh, Hendrix still held a slim 2-1 lead, but the squad added an important insurance run. Spencer Summers and Seth Mobley strung together a pair of singles before Drew Judson drove in a run on a chopper down the third base line that squeezed past the third baseman, scoring Summers. The extra insurance gave the Warriors bullpen all the breathing room they needed as they shut the door on the Carleton batters.
