SHERMAN, Texas - The Hendrix College softball team split a pair of games with Austin College to open their season on Saturday afternoon at Settlers Park. The Warriors earned a 4-3 win in game one but dropped game two by a score of 1-0.
Victoria Hughes led the Warriors with three hits on the day and earned a stolen base, while
Morgan Fires ripped a single in each game.Â
In game one,
Autumn Martin pitched six scoreless innings and went into the bottom of the seventh with a 4-0 lead. In the final frame, Martin allowed three runs on four hits, but wriggled her way out of a bases loaded jam to preserve the 4-3 victory and earn the complete-game win from the circle.
Shelby Anderson provided the team's biggest hit, ripping a two-run double in the top of the fifth inning that gave the Warriors some extra insurance runs. Fires and
Bryanna Carlisle each contributed with an RBI single as the Orange and Black earned the win in the first of the twinbill.
Game two was a pitcher's duel between
Ariel McDonald and Austin's Victoria Herrera. Mcdonald tossed six innings, allowing one run while scattering six hits and ringing up a pair of strikeouts. The junior took the tough-luck loss as the Warriors fell 1-0. The Hendrix bats were baffled by Herrera who threw seven scoreless frames for the win.Â
