Warriors Drop Opener to Pirates

CONWAY, Ark. - On a cool Feburary night, the Hendrix College women's lacrosse team fell in their season opener, dropping the contest 18-7 to Southwestern University (Texas). 

Shelby Hill had an impressive debut, scoring a pair of goals, dishing off an assist, and pulling down a program-record nine draw controls for the Warriors. Bridget Umble added three goals while Kaitlyn Smith and Raychl Reger each found the net once for the Warriors. Senior Landri Wenzel added an assist. 

Rebecca Alexander made seven saves for the Warriors but took the loss in goal. Southwestern's Caitlin Stanyard earned the win in net for the Pirates, making three saves in 54:49 in net and allowing six goals. Rosa Castaneda Hern played the final 5:11 allowing one goal and making three saves.

Hendrix opened the game with a score, in the first three minutes. Freshman Shelby Hill found her classmate Bridget Umble for the goal that gave the Warriors the early lead. Southwestern responded with seven consecutive tallies to take the lead. Hendrix added a pair of goals before the halftime whistle but trailed 12-3 at the break. 

In the second half, the Warriors' defense tightened up, allowing just six goals. Hill added two goals to her total and Kaitlyn Smith got in on the scoring in the final minute of play as the team fell 18-7.

Jordan Rausch and Reilly Frazier led the squad defensively with three ground balls apiece, while Rausch, Frazier, Hill, and Meghan Ayers all recorded a team-high two caused turnovers.

- Six of the seven goals scored by the Warriors were tallied by the freshman class (Umble 3, Hill 2, Smith 1).
- With her assist, Landri Wenzel became the program's all-time assists leader. 
- Shelby Hill's nine draw controls passed the old program-record of eight set last season.
- The Hendrix defense pressured Southwestern into 25 total turnovers, recording 13 caused turnovers as a team. 
- The Warriors went just 1-for-5 on free-position opportunities
- Umble's three goal performance ties the program-best for most goals in a debut.
 
Southwestern Notes
- Southwestern earned assists on nine of their 18 goals, including three from Allison Schmitt.
- Courtney Ragland and Kate Davis led the Pirates in scoring with five goals apiece.
- The Pirates edged the Warriors in draw controls, 14-13.

Hendrix falls to 0-1 on the season and will seek their first win on Sunday at 2 p.m. when they play host to University of Dallas.
